How to Change the Dome Tip on Your Hearing Aid
The dome (also called the ear tip) is the soft piece that sits in your ear canal. It is a wear item — it is meant to be replaced regularly, and changing one takes less than a minute once you have done it a couple of times.
When should you change it?
Replace standard ear pieces about every three months. Change them sooner if you notice:
- Cracks, splits or tears
- The dome has gone stiff, yellowed or discolored
- Wax you cannot clean out
- The dome feels loose, or your hearing aid has started whistling
Know your dome type
Signia RIC hearing aids use one of these standard ear pieces. Your provider marked which type you were fitted with — make sure your replacements match it, in the same size.
Step 1: Take the old dome off
Hold the receiver — the small speaker at the end of the thin wire — firmly between your thumb and finger.
Grip the old dome and pull it straight off, twisting gently if it does not come away easily.
Do not pull on the receiver cable. The wire is delicate and pulling on it is one of the most common causes of hearing aid repairs.
Step 2: Put the new dome on
Line the new dome up straight over the end of the receiver.
Push it on firmly until it fully covers the retention rings on the receiver. This is the part people most often get wrong.
Give it a gentle tug to make sure it is on firmly. It should not slide off.
Why the firm fit matters
If a dome is not fully attached, it can come loose and stay behind in your ear when you take the hearing aid out. Always check the fit before putting the hearing aid in your ear.
Which dome size is best?
If your dome feels loose in your ear, or your hearing aid whistles (sound leaking out), try the next size up or switch to a different style. Most of the time it is a very minor change that makes all the difference.
If a bigger dome feels uncomfortable or you cannot find a size that both seals and feels good, give us a call — we can look at other options, including a custom mold.
