How to Pair Your Hearing Aids With Your Phone
Once your hearing aids are connected to your phone, calls and music can play directly into them, and you can change volume and programs from an app. Here is how to set it up — and how to get someone to do it with you if you would rather not do it alone.
The easiest way: let Tech Support do it with you
Download the Signia app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Then call the Hearing Aid Tech Support Line at (800) 350-6093. They will stay on the line and walk you through every step at your own pace.
This is exactly what the line is there for — there is no charge, and no question is too small.
Before you start
- Make sure your hearing aids are fully charged.
- Turn Bluetooth on in your phone's settings.
- Have your hearing aid model and your phone type handy.
Put your hearing aids into pairing mode
Turn your hearing aids off and then back on again. The easiest way is to put them in the charger for a moment and take them back out. They will stay ready to pair for about three minutes.
On an iPhone
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Hearing Devices.
Turn your hearing aids on. Your name will appear on the screen marked “Not Paired”.
Tap it. A pairing box appears in the middle of the screen — tap Pair.
If you have two hearing aids, a second box appears. Tap Pair again.
On an Android phone
Go to Settings → Connections → Bluetooth. On some phones this is Settings → Connected devices.
Turn your hearing aids on, then tap Scan or Pair new device.
Wait until both hearing aids appear under available devices. Tap one and confirm by tapping Pair.
If the second one does not join on its own after about 10 seconds, repeat the steps for it.
Direct streaming on Android requires a phone that supports Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA). Most newer Android phones do.
Then set up the Signia app
The app connects to your hearing aids separately from the phone-call connection, so there is a second short setup:
Open the Signia app.
Allow it to use Bluetooth and to send notifications when it asks. Both are needed for the app to work fully.
Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your hearing aids.
Once it is set up, the app lets you adjust volume, switch hearing programs, and fine-tune your sound.
If pairing doesn't work
- Turn your hearing aids off and back on to restart the three-minute pairing window.
- Turn Bluetooth off, restart your phone, then turn Bluetooth back on and try again.
- Make sure the hearing aids are not already paired to another phone or tablet nearby.
- Call (800) 350-6093 — connectivity and pairing issues are their specialty.
Holding a phone to your ear
If you are not streaming, hold the phone slightly above your ear so the phone speaker lines up with the hearing aid's microphone, and turn it slightly so your ear is not completely covered.
If you take a lot of calls, ask us about adding a telephone program to your hearing aids.
On an airplane
Bluetooth use may be restricted, especially during take-off and landing. You can switch Bluetooth off in your hearing aids from the Signia app.
