Hearing Aid Care:
Everyday Habits That Make Them Last

Hearing aids are small, sophisticated computers that live in a warm, damp environment all day. A few simple habits will keep yours working well for years.

Daily Routine

The Eight Essential Habits

Small adjustments to your daily routine can dramatically extend the life of your devices.

1

Wear them at least 6 hours a day

The goal is all your waking hours. Consistent wear is what makes hearing aids feel comfortable and natural.

2

Dehumidify every day

Moisture is the number one enemy. It causes corrosion and microphone drift over time.

3

Practice putting them on

Five minutes a day in front of a mirror during your first week builds the habit fast.

4

Water and devices don't mix

Don't store them in the bathroom or wear them in steamy areas. If you walk into the shower with them or get caught in the rain, dehumidify immediately.

5

Keep them away from pets

Use your case whenever you are not wearing them. Dogs are strongly drawn to hearing aids and can destroy a pair in seconds.

6

Hair products go on first

Apply hair spray and other products before putting your hearing aids on. Hair spray clogs the microphones.

7

Clean often

Wipe wax out of the domes once a month, and perform a fuller clean once a week.

8

Keep away from heat

Never near fire, a microwave, an oven, or sitting in direct sunlight in a hot car.

Water is not a small thing

Never rinse your hearing aids under running water, never submerge them, and never apply pressure while cleaning. If they do get wet, dry them and use a dehumidifier right away — do not put them in the charger while damp.

Power Management

Charging Your Rechargeable Hearing Aids

Rechargeable Signia hearing aids have a battery built in permanently — there are no small batteries to change.

Three Signia charger options

Signia offers a standard charger, a portable charger, and a Dry&Clean charger that dries as it charges.

Charge every night, even if the battery is not empty. Charge overnight so you start each day full.

A full charge takes about 4 hours. After just 30 minutes you already have up to 6 hours of use.

When the battery gets low you'll hear an alert, repeated every 20 minutes. You then have about 1.5 hours left.

Make sure the charger is plugged into power. If it isn't, the hearing aids will not turn off or charge.

Wipe sweat and moisture off the charging contacts before inserting, to prevent corrosion.

If You Are Storing Them Away

For a few days, simply turn them off or leave them in a powered charger. For weeks or months: charge them fully first, then turn them off, and store them with a drying product.

Don't leave them uncharged for 6 months

A rechargeable battery left flat for more than six months can be permanently damaged and will need to be replaced. Recharge stored hearing aids at least every few months.

Safety Essentials

Charge only with an approved Signia charger Never try to repair or replace the battery yourself Do not take the device apart Do not use one that is deformed or damaged Never dispose of devices in fire or water If performance drops sharply, seek professional help
